It came as no surprise when Eric Wells was named as the first head football coach at Dawson High School. A native of La Marque, Texas, Wells has always been associated with a winning football program.
After serving as an assistant coach for the Cougars for six years and winning two state championships -- Wells came to Pearland with long-time coaching associate and friend, Tony Heath to become a part of one of the most impressive turnarounds in Texas football history.
The Pearland Oilers were one of the most consistent losing programs in the state and Wells was not familiar with that kind of mindset. As the offensive coordinator for the Oilers for the past 10 years, he helped orchestrate an offensive machine that literally ran through the defenses of some of the top football programs in the Houston area.
In so doing -- there were several players who gained state-wide attention including three running backs who climbed into the Top 10 Class 5A all-time leading rushing list. No school has ever had two running backs, much less three, in the Top 10 in 5A Texas football history.
All three running backs gained All-State honors beginning with Anthony Evans (UH) who is No. 4 on the all-time leading rushing list with 6,192 yards and 66 TDs (1997-2000). Foswhitt Whittaker (Texas) finished at No. 6 with 5,717 yards and 51 TDs (2004-2006). Brandon Roberson (Northwestern) is at the No. 10 spot with 5,235 yards and 65 TDs (2001-2003).
Prior to Wells arriving at Pearland HS -- the Oilers were 6-63-1 from 1990 to 1996. It took a couple of years for Wells to see an offensive breakthrough, but when he did, the Oilers became the most prolific offensive machine in school history from 1999 to 2006.
Now that Wells is at the helm of a new program, there is no doubt that he will take all the things he has learned from La Marque head coach Alan Weddell and coach Heath that will help lay a strong foundation to see the Dawson Eagles become a winning football program.
Wells was instrumental in the record-setting performance by All-State running back Fozzy Whittaker. It was the last season for both coach and player at Pearland High School. Together -- they made an exciting trip through the 2006 post-season -- all the way to the Class 5A Division I state semifinals.
While Wells begins a new journey at DHS in 2007 - Whittaker begins his collegiate career for the Texas Longhorns.
The young and winsome coach is married to wife, Angela, who is an R.N. They have two children, Tucker, age 10, and Spencer, age 8.
A graduate of Stephen F. Austin University with a B.S. degree, Wells is also committed to seeing that his players excel in the classroom as dedicated students.
