PASADENA — It took a little while for the Dawson offense to get untracked, but when they did, they rolled up 413 total yards and 18 first downs in a 21-7 non-district win over the 5A Pasadena Dobie Longhorns.

The real story was the way the Eagles' defense controlled the hapless Dobie offense limiting them to only six first downs and 193 total yards with 67 yards coming on a fourth down fake punt that resulted in the only score for the 'Horns.

“I can’t say enough about our defense,” Wells said. “And other than a fake punt, we had a shutout.”

The Eagles didn't score on their opening drive, but things changed on their second possession as quarterback Darian Lazard led the offense on a 71-yard drive culminated with Akeem Blackshire’s 12-yard touchdown run — his first of three scores on the night.

The extra point missed the mark leaving the Eagles with a 6-0 lead with 3:49 left in the opening period.

Dawson put together a second scoring drive of 12-plays, 94-yards as Blackshire scored from the six-yard line.. The drive was sparked by a 45-yard pass completion from Lazard to Marcus Vaughn.

Once again - the extra point missed the mark with Dawson in front 12-0 with 2:14 left before intermission.

Dawson got on the scoreboard first in the second half as placekicker Stuart Watkins nailed a 28-yard field goal giving the Eagles a 15-0 lead with 3:41 left in the third period.

The biggest highlight for Dobie came with 1:29 left in the third quarter when Maurice Pollard got the short-snap from center on fourth down and found a running lane for a 67-yard scoring jaunt to cut the lead to 15-7.

But that would be as close as the Longhorns would get as Blackshire closed out his scoring parade with a 10-yard run with 8:43 remaining in the game. Once again - the extra point was shanked leaving the Eagles with a 21-7 final score.

It was apparent that the Eagles kind of toyed with the Longhorns the entire game and made the plays when they had to in the winning effort.

“I think we were just in better condition,” Wells said. “We saw a little of that on film and they were so much bigger than us. But we felt if we kept running from sideline to sideline, they’d get tired, eventually.”

Lazard was 9-for-16 passing for 219 yards. He also ran for 72 yards, including a 27-yard run giving him 291 total yards. Blackshire had 14 carries for 56 yards and three scores. Xavier Brown had 10 totes for 53 yards. Vaughn had six catches for 171 yards.

Dawson (2-0) will host their home opener on Friday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig against 5A Baytown Sterling.
